Kate grew up on the wide open plains of eastern Colorado. Her first experience with ceramics came as a young child at Ester’s Ceramic Shop where everyone smoked cigarettes and wore curlers. Clutching her allowance and pedaling her bike across town, she immersed herself in Ester’s world of greenware elves and romping kittens. From then on, she’s been hooked on clay and has had dirty hands ever since.

After earning a degree in Art History from the University of Colorado, Kate launched a long career in studio pottery. Her early work concentrated on making dinnerware and functional ceramics, and later evolved into sculptural vessels which she exhibited in galleries on both east and west coasts.  Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in shows, chosen for private collections, and published in many books. She has given workshops at universities, colleges and art centers.

Building a home with her husband provided unlimited surfaces for handmade tile, thus sparking a new direction in clay. After twenty years of designing and fabricating custom tile for both residential and commercial applications, Kate has recently designed a production line of distinctive, handmade tile. Drawing on a lifetime of experience in ceramics, her focus is now on producing this unique line of tile. At the same time, custom tile requests are still honored, as Kate can’t resist the pleasure and challenges of collaborative commissions.

Kate lives and works in the mountains of Colorado, sharing a studio with her husband (a studio furniture maker), two children and a motley collection of chickens.
